This book concerns all of us as it deals with the most important development in present-day societies: we are getting older and older and many old people need the care of professional helpers.
    Suzanne Buis, a geriatric nurse, depicts a number of typical everyday situations in a nursing home. She describes the problems of the staff, the delicate balance between personal commitment and time pressure, the conflicts within the staff, the problems of old age, illness, and death, and the deplorable state of many old people´s homes and nursing homes.
    In her epilogue for the German edition of the book Suzanne Buis discusses what may be done to improve the situation.

About the author:

Suzanne Buis, who grew up in the Netherlands, studied medicine. She has worked in several nursing homes in the Netherlands and in Germany and is presently occupied as a peripatetic geriatric nurse. She is author (or co-author respectively) of six books on geriatric care.
