Original title (German):
Das selbst gewählte Exil – Erfahrungen mit einem autistischen Kind
English title translation:
The Self-Chosen Exile – Experiences with an Autistic Child
Contents and description:
This is a book about infant autism viewed from the perspective of a mother. Lara Andriessen describes the difficulties of bringing up a son who, for a long time, doesn´t learn to speak, utters shrill screams, and refuses all kinds of social contact. However, the mother´s unflagging endeavours to free her son out of his isolation as well as the many therapy approaches tried on him finally help the child break the walls of his prison of autism. We are fascinated to learn how, at last, he starts talking, attends a mainstream school, and tells us as a young adult how he himself understands the phenomenon of autism for which he has coined the expression “the self-chosen exile”. The appendix of the book offers a lot of advice for parents concerned, including useful addresses, websites etc.
